Situation, Extent, Borders

Physical Map of the Region of FenizPolitical Map of the Region of FenizFeniz is situated on the east coast of the continent of Longerath on the equator. It stretches from 9° to 15° of western longitude (666 km or 414 mi.) and from 15° of southern latitude to 5° of northern latitude (2220 km or 1380 mi.). It covers 972,780 km² or 604,586 square miles.

The exclave of Ulnovabad is situated on the west coast of the continenet of Eras (Old Continent) at 15° of northern latitude. The description of the Ulnovabad exclave is to be found on a separate page.

Note: The decription of the Fora Rifo protectorate is not contained in this volume.

Bounded by the Futuronian Ocean in the north-east where three islands belong to Cimera, its neighbours are to the west, Phenixia, to the southwest, Aethelnia (a.k.a. Pharos Arroz), to the south, Angliyaa (a.k.a. Lazischyna and Lagod, respectively), to the west, Dascunya, and to the northwest, Estontetso.

The length of the coastline is 1600 km without islands; the lengths of the borderlines are:
    km mi.
- Phenixia 1,550 960
- Aethelnia 550 340
- Angliyaa 620 380
- Dascunya 1,660 1,000
- Estontetso 560 350

Feniz lies in the time zone CMT - 01:00 hours.

Natural Conditions

Geographically, Feniz is divided into four main regions which differ from each other to a great extent. The northern part, with Al'Jumu-Ria (the Old Emirates) lying north of the Equator and the Ir'Mokra Id-Hochland Emirate (Mokra) south of it, falls into two regions, the coastal and the desert region. These are separated from the lowland region (Ir'Sukha Id-Hochland Emirate or Sukha) by the mountain region.

The geographic names used here refer to the relevant map of the Geographic Society of Vexillium.

The coastal region (comprising the I'Para Lass-Puki Emirate, the Ze'Borna Ti-Esto Sheikdom, and the coastal parts of the Ir'Fenis Myste-Gal Sheikdom and the coastal part of the Ir'Mokra Id-Hochland Emirate) borders the Futuronian Ocean. The coastline is highly polymorphic, with several minor islands. The coastal plain reaches some 30 to 100 km into the land. Being influenced by the ocean, it is mostly arable cropland which is, however, insufficient for the nutrition of the population and in the extreme north (Ze'Borna Ti-Esto) turns into woodland, most of which forms one of Feniz's VEHPA.

As agricultural products we find wheat, barley, millet, rice, vegetables, dates, potatoes, and watermelons. Cattle-breeding comprises sheep, camels, and horses.

Behind this region, in the transition zone towards the inland, we often find salt swamps already encircled by the desert.

The desert region (comprising parts of the Ir'Fenis Myste-Gal Sheikdom, most of the Prall'Ist Anni-Esto Emirate, and the desert part of the Ir'Mokra Id-Hochland Emirate) has developed on the lee-side of the Central Longerathian Mountains. It extends towards the north-western borders and southward as far as the high-rising Central Longerathian Mountains. The ultra-arid desert is covered with sand dunes and scorched wastelands only and contains non-perennial rivers (wadis) and a few oases.

Main mineral resources of this region are high-grade petroleum, natural gas, gold, silver, iron, bauxite, copper, tin, and phosphate.

The power industry relies upon power plants operated with petroleum and gas, often in combination with (power-consuming) sea-water desalination installations.

The desert region imperceptibly turns into the mountain region (comprising the kernel part of the Prall'Ist Anni-Esto Emirate and the south-eastern part of the Ir'Mokra Id-Hochland Emirate) which rises to over 3,500 meters. It is formed by the High Chain and the Central Chain of the Central Longerathian Mountains which are part of the continental watershed, and the Central Phenixian Ridge.

Main mineral resources of this region are gold and silver; however, the most important mineral resource are the enriched uranium ores deposits which supply Feniz with another tremendous source of energy. The use for nuclear weapon systems and even the export is prohibited.

The lowland region (thelow part of the Ir'Sukha Id-Hochland Emirate) consists of a basin formed by the Central Longerathian Mountains and opening to the Dascunyan Lowlands.

This region is almost entirely used for agriculture and cattle breeding.

Climate

The climate in the northern regions is generally hot and dry, the largest amount of these regions being a virtual (!) desert, except for the coastal region. Average temperatures are around 30° C with large variation between day and night. The precipitation does not exceed 150 mm per year in the desert region and 400 mm in the coastal region.

The climate of the southern region has been described as "sub tropical in valleys, moderate in mountains".

Flora and Fauna

The flora and fauna of the desert region is the typical one as you find it in every such area.

In the northern part of the costal region, where some prairie and wooded areas exist, a population of elephants has been detected whose existence has long been reported but never proven. Special measures to preserve these magnificent animals have been taken.

The flora and fauna of the southern region has yet to be researched.
